In January, reports emerged that Chinese tech firm Lenovo was exploring acquisition and “strategic alliance” options with BlackBerry (still known as Research In Motion at that time), as Lenovo worked to build its mobile device business. At the time, Lenovo said that RIM was one of many options it was considering, and a bid never materialized—but perhaps since BlackBerry’s market share has continued to fall since then, a less expensive version of a company they previously considered purchasing might be attractive to Lenovo. As The Atlantic has pointed out though, Lenovo may have some trouble getting a BlackBerry purchase approved by the Canadian government, since the smartphone has been deemed acceptable for use in national defence. The same problem would face Chinese firm Huawei if it were to express any interest in BlackBerry.
