Minolta DiMage Z1
At a Manufacturers’ Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $649, the Minolta DiMage Z1 is a 3.2-megapixel digital camera that offers users an amazing amount of detail to ensure high quality prints and enlargements. It includes a 40X combined zoom (10X Mega-zoom and 4X digital zoom), which is equivalent to a 38-1,520mm lens on a SLR camera. The unit’s switch finder feature allows the camera monitor to be viewed directly or through the viewfinder.
Hewlett-Packard’s new DVD Movie Writer dc3000 is the first product to hit the market allowing users to convert analog media (like VHS tape footage) to digital format to create DVDs. Using the dc3000, a product priced at $499, users can burn extra copies, design DVD case covers, edit videos and record a range of file types, such as music, photos, data, etc., to DVD+R/+RW or CD-R/RW. “[This] is the first product of its kind that enables users to keep their precious memories and moments alive by converting old analog video to digital video that can be burned to DVD with one device,” says Heather Spencer, product manager, HP DVD Movie Writer, HP Canada.
Pioneer’s DVR-310-S DVD recorder allows you to record whatever you want in a format that will last more than 10 times as long as video tape. For $799 retail, the DVR-310-S “will be a welcome addition to your home,” says Roger Archambault, senior product specialist, home electronics, Pioneer Electronics of Canada Inc. “Recording on tape is ancient history now that DVD recorders are here.” For those interested in a unit with a hard disk drive, the DVR-510H-S, priced at $1,199, is capable of recording over 100 hours on its HDD.
Samsung Duocam SC-D5000
Samsung’s Duocam SC-D5000 is a combined digital camera and digital camcorder, all in a single unit. Available for $1,999.99 MSRP, the Duocam features a dual lens compact shooting design, a 10X Optical/800X digital zoom on the MiniDV and a 3X Optical/6X digital zoom on the digital camera. “It’s really amazing how handy it is to have a digital camcorder and digital camera in one,” says Louis Kim, corporate marketing manager, Samsung Electronics Canada Inc. “Think about any special occasion when you would need to get video footage and still photos. Instead of bringing both, imagine how great it is to bring just one small, sleek Duocam.” The MiniDV offers 680K CCD pixel resolution, while the digital camera includes 4.13-megapixel resolution.
The Pentax OptioS4 is a full-featured and ultra-compact 4.0-megapixel digital camera that includes 3X optical zoom and 4X digital zoom. Priced at $599.99, the camera also features a movie mode with sound and a voice recording mode. “The OptioS4 is the ultimate blend of size and functionality,” says Christine Otani, marketing coordinator, Pentax Canada Inc. “It’s big on features, yet small enough to fit into a shirt pocket or handbag.”
Epson PowerLite Home 10
Epson’s PowerLite Home 10 is a home theatre projector that allows you to turn ordinary viewing into extraordinary entertainment. HP Photosmart 945
Hewlett-Packard’s Photosmart 945 is a 5.3-megapixel digital camera that features 56X total zoom. Priced at $699 retail, the 945 includes innovative Adaptive Lighting technology, which provides corrective lighting and better colour balance for indoor shooting where a flash is required and outdoor shooting in extreme lighting situations. “The HP Photosmart 945 digital camera is the world’s first digital camera to successfully incorporate adaptive lighting technology that enables the camera to produce shots that look more like what consumers see with their own eyes — a true-to-life image,” says HP category business manager, Lori Abbott.

The Minolta DiMage Xt is a 3.2-Megapixel digital camera capable of accurately capturing fine lines and intricate detail. The $499 (MSRP) camera features innovative folded optics, which means that the lens does not protrude — even when zooming — so the Xt always remains slim.
