Paying obese employees to lose weight is a losing proposition, according to the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Such programs are surprisingly common—more than 80% of the largest employers in the United States have one in place. But monitoring weight loss at work backfires, the researchers write, because employees resent the intrusion and the feeling of being judged: “That made sustained engagement and behavior change more challenging.”
