The Gaglardis—father and son team Bob and Tom—are on a bit of a tear in terms of their global expansion. Last year they opened the first Moxie’s restaurant outside Canada, followed by another one this year, and this past May they announced plans to build a £20 million (about $33 million CAD) hotel in Aberdeen, Scotland. These recent moves add to their massive portfolio of businesses which include 55 hotels (Sandman and Sutton Place, along with B.C.’s Revelstoke ski resort) and some 170 restaurants, Moxies being their flagship. Having honed the brand in Canada and grown it to 60 locations here, they opened the first two U.S. restaurant in Dallas and Houston. The neighbouring Texas locations are not a coincidence; the Gaglardis already know the state well as the owners of the Dallas Stars hockey team. Tom orchestrated the purchase in 2011 and has since overseen a renaissance for the team, boosting ticket sales and investing in talent that put the Stars in the playoffs last year. That now looks to be just the opening act, with the Gaglardis’ hospitality and property development company, Northland Properties, looking at expanding further in Texas. “We have tentacles here now,” Tom Gaglardi told a Dallas city magazine last year.
