If there’s a startup in Canada worthy of funding, chances are John Ruffolo has taken a look at it. As head of the venture capital arm of the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System, Ruffolo is injecting much-needed capital into the country’s tech sector. The $500 million fund has put money into 25 of the country’s highest-profile startups, including Hootsuite, Shopify and D2L Corp. Ruffolo has been instrumental in attracting foreign investors to Canadian startups, too, by helping them understand the landscape.
