You’d be hard-pressed to find a better template for bootstrapping a business than PlentyOfFish. Markus Frind built the Vancouver-based dating platform with zero outside investment, meaning he walked away much richer when the Match Group acquired his company for US$575 million in July. Having insulated his equity from venture capitalists, Frind has become one himself—he’s already led investment rounds at furniture e-tailer Cymax and online lending platform Grouplend. Even a small portion of his new-found wealth will fuel British Columbia’s burgeoning tech ecosystem.
