The Thomson family casts a long shadow in Canada, controlling a $33-billion media and information powerhouse, on top of assets like the Globe and Mail. Third-generation leader David Thomson is expanding the business even farther abroad. At the Global Islamic Economy Summit in Dubai this year, he sat front-row centre next to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum of Dubai, one of the most influential leaders in the Middle East. In a private meeting, Thomson outlined his plans to open a new innovation centre in Dubai, and other measures to support the area’s economy. The Thomson family is worth more than $30 billion.
