Winner: Zellers
Few would have thought Zellers of all companies would end up in the history books as a case study for how to wind down a business successfully. Though it was innovative from time to time throughout its 81-year history, Zellers has most recently been known as Canada’s least-cool department store. That is until owner HBC decided to sell off most of the chain’s leases to Target. Zellers staff faced their inevitable fate in style, with creative in-store and social-media campaigns, one of which saw its teddy bear mascot, Zeddy, “liquidated” back to the woods from whence he came in a hilarious series of promotional videos. (Zeddy was later “adopted” as the new mascot of cancer support centre Camp Trillium.) We’ll miss you, Zellers. Who knew?
