Job Description:

Urban planners find themselves doing a ton of research: analyzing data on factors affecting land use, speaking with authorities and stakeholders, and evaluating proposals. Then, of course, there’s also the development planning, taking into account everything from zoning to transportation to environmental protection.

Job Qualifications:

You’ll need a bachelor degree in urban and regional planning, but a degree in geography, architecture or engineering may work, too. Some employers are looking for master’s degree, and most places require a membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners. Some companies keep an eye out for applicants with Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED certification, which is administered by the Canada Green Building Council.


The median salary of an urban planner is $85,000, with a 15% increase over the past five years.

Career Opportunity:

Land use is only getting more complicated for governments and developers—driving up demand for urban planners. Over half of all urban planners work in the public sector. But, be prepared for competition in this field, since the number of graduates with a bachelor’s degree in urban planning tripled from 2001 to 2011, while graduates with a master’s degree doubled, according to Service Canada.
