Five tips to help supervisors strike a balance between productivity and flexibility

Mobile technology in the workplace has introduced countless conveniences, freeing employees to work from nearly any location. It has also presented managers with a tough question: how do you manage a team working from diverse locations—sometimes at irregular hours?

While 75% of workers believe they’re more productive when working flexibly, according to a recent survey by Regus Canada, managers may have concerns about how to get the most from a widespread workforce. Wes Lenci, VP of Regus Canada, offers five tips to help supervisors with remote workers strike a balance between productivity and flexibility.

1. Establish goals: Write down plans and create a vision for the new workplace with employees, then implement a results-based management program that will allow managers to easily set and measure goals for their virtual workforce.

2. Communicate with the team: Keep on top of projects by checking in regularly and make an effort to understand the nature of the work employees are engaged in. Create face-to-face interaction by scheduling in-person meetings and video conferencing whenever possible.

3. Keep on-demand space available: Reserving professional workspaces for employees working remotely allows access to professional services and support when needed, as well as a chance to collaborate and network in person.

4. Promote corporate culture: Encourage corporate camaraderie by creating opportunities such as, holiday parties and company outings for your employees to socialize formally and informally, as well as form networks with other professionals.

5. Encourage feedback: Listening to employees’ concerns about virtual working and considering their suggestions could help develop a better virtual working program for your organization.
