Great Ideas: From goals to action

Written by ProfitGuide

You’re an entrepreneur with ambitions. That means you set goals for yourself and your company. But how effectively do you create a plan to achieve them?

“The difference between those who are successful at realizing their goals and those who are not is that successful people formalize their goals,” says Ruth Sherman in her book Get them to see it your way right away: How to persuade anyone of anything. “They develop hierarchies of priorities [and] write out a plan of action for reaching them because they know that goals can only be reached by solid planning.”

Sherman offers these tips to help you reach your business goals.

  1. Be specific: Instead of very broad statements such as, “I want to be rich,” your goals should be specific, such as, “I want to make a lot of money selling this widget.”
  2. Stir passion: What turns you on? If you could accomplish anything at all, what would it be? What do you spend most of your time thinking about and wishing for? Answering these questions will help you to unearth the things you truly desire in life.
  3. Forget size: Goals can be large, small oranything in between. They can be far, medium or near term. They can be intended to be achieved simultaneously or one by one.
  4. Prioritize: Decide what is urgent, important and unimportant and what is achievable. Determine what you can do right now to start down the path to success.
  5. Act: DO IT.
  6. Revisit and revise: Periodically review your plan and asses how you’re doing and if things are not going according to the original plan, ask yourself why and decide whether you need to revisit your original plan. If so, revisit and revise.
