Last December Southern stepped down as chair of ATCO Group, the company he co-founded in 1947. He was replaced by his daughter, Nancy. She had been serving as CEO since 2003, and is well versed in the many divisions of ATCO, which span energy, utilities and construction. As for the elder Southern, retirement gives him more time now to tend to Spruce Meadows, an equestrian facility outside of Calgary owned by the horse-mad family.
