Winners & Losers (December 10, 2012)

In a highly notable victory that potentially overshadowed being re-elected to the most powerful office on earth several seconds earlier, U.S. President Barack Obama gained serious respect on Nov. 6 when his simple three-word tweet, “Four more years,” became the most re-tweeted tweet ever. The message, which was attached to a photo of the president hugging his wife, Michelle, was re-tweeted more than 800,000 times, and “Favourited” nearly 300,000. Sure, Obama’s victory almost certainly guarantees the continued implementation of his Affordable Health Care Act and allows him to push his future agenda without fear, but 800,000 re-tweets? That’s bigger than Kutcher and Bieber.

Obama’s Twitter victory was so impressive, it even overshadowed election night’s Big Losers. Mitt Romney should have walked away with the Loser crown no contest. But, in keeping with his desire to be the biggest everything, Donald Trump stole Romney’s thunder. Trump took a decidedly different approach to his post-election tweeting, unleashing a barrage of hate, calling Obama’s victory a “disgusting injustice” that was creating a nation divided, while at the same time calling for revolution. Trump showed an uncharacteristic level of self-awareness by deleting most of his tweets by morning. Sadly, we’ll probably have four more years of Trump too.
