US Rep. Paul Ryan says House leaders planning to tackle immigration with multiple bills

SAN ANTONIO – U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan says House Republicans will tackle immigration reform in pieces rather than the Senate’s comprehensive approach.

Ryan said Thursday that separating issues like border security and guest worker programs into multiple bills was the smart approach. He said the House won’t go to conference with the Senate plan and says he doesn’t want to end up with some “1,000-page bill.”

The GOP House caucus is meeting next week for its annual retreat. House Speaker John Boehner has said immigration will be at the top of the agenda.

Ryan says House Republicans will lay out “core principles” but didn’t offer a timeline.

Ryan spoke at a San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce event. Among his hosts were Texas businessmen who’ve pressed for action on immigration policy.
