Recalls this week include fish bowls, bicycles, electric pencil sharpeners, rocking chairs

A line of fish bowls sold at PetSmart that can break during normal handling are among this week’s recalled consumer products. Others include bicycles with a faulty fork and electric pencil sharpeners.

Here’s a more detailed look:

FISH BOWLS

DETAILS: 1.75 gallon glass fish bowls that are shaped like brandy snifters sold at PetSmart stores nationwide from March 2010 through September 2013. The fish bowls were sold under the Grreat Choice or Top Fin brand names with SKU number 5140161 and UPC code 737257187092. The SKU and UPC codes are printed on a white sticker on the bottom of the fish bowl.

WHY: The glass fish bowls can crack, shatter or break during normal handling, posing a laceration hazard to consumers.

INCIDENTS: 20 new reports of the glass fish bowl breaking during normal use, including 14 additional reports of cuts to fingers and hands. Seven cuts required stitches and three others required surgery for lacerated tendons.

HOW MANY: About 81,300 in the U.S. and 4,000 in Canada. An additional 10,200 were recalled in the U.S. on April 24, 2014 and 1,000 were previously recalled in Canada.

OUTDOOR ROCKING CHAIRS

DETAILS: REI evrgrn Campfire Rocker chairs. The collapsible rocking chairs were sold in blue, grey, green, and orange fabric supported by four metal tubes and wooden rockers at the base and are intended for outdoor use. A small black tab is attached to the edge of the fabric seat containing the word “evrgrn”. They were sold at REI stores nationwide and online at www.REI.com from April 2015 through August 2015.

WHY: The chair can tip backwards while rocking, posing a fall hazard to the user.

INCIDENTS: Four reports of children who have tipped over in the rocker chairs while in the store. No injuries have been reported.

HOW MANY: About 30,500.

BICYCLES

DETAILS: All 2014 Kona Wo bicycles with a charcoal black frame and silver decals. The word “Wo” is on the top tube of the frame and the word “Kona” is on the down tube of the frame and on the side of the seat. They were sold at authorized Kona dealers nationwide from September 2013 through July 2014.

WHY: The bicycle fork can crack or break, posing a fall hazard.

INCIDENTS: One report of the bicycle fork breaking at the junction of the crown. No injuries have been reported.

HOW MANY: About 530.

FISH BOWL KITS

DETAILS: The Top Fin Betta Bowl Kits with LED Lights include a 0.6-gallon glass betta bowl and a base with an LED light sold at PetSmart stores nationwide and online at www.petsmart.com from September 2013 through October 2015. The plastic bases come in black, blue, pink, purple and silver. The following UPC numbers are located on the packages of recalled items. Black with UPC number 73725752848, Blue with UPC number 73725747577, Pink with UPC number 73725747595, Purple with UPC number 73725752855, and Silver with UPC number 73725747598.

WHY: The glass bowl can crack, shatter or break during normal handling, posing a laceration hazard.

INCIDENTS: Seven reports of incidents, including five reports of cuts to fingers and hands.

HOW MANY: About 148,000 in the U.S. and about 8,000 sold in Canada.

ELECTRIC PENCIL SHARPENERS

DETAILS: Bostitch brand electric pencil sharpeners, including models Quietsharp Glow Classroom and Super Pro Commercial electric pencil sharpeners. “Bostitch” is embossed on the side. The Quietsharp Glow Classroom sharpener has model number EPS11HC and date codes between 4714 and 3215. The Super Pro Glow Commercial has model number EPS14HC and date codes between 1612 and 2715. The model number is printed on a sticker on the bottom of the sharpeners. The date code range is a two digit production week and a two digit production year (WWYY). The date code is visible inside the unit when the pencil shavings tray is removed. Quietsharp Glow and Super Pro are printed on the pencil sharpeners’ packaging. They were sold at Office Depot, Staples and other office supply stores and distributors nationwide and online at Amazon.com from April 2012 through August 2015.

WHY: The electric components inside can energize the pencil sharpener, posing a shock hazard.

INCIDENTS: One report of a consumer who received a shock from the recalled electric pencil sharpener.

HOW MANY: About 44,000.

VARIOUS PRODUCTS AT HOME DEPOT

DETAILS: 28 different products were sold by Home Depot after they were recalled between 2012 and 2015. This involves about 2,310 units of recalled products, including about 1,300 sold by Home Depot to consumers and 1,010 sent by Home Depot to salvagers or recyclers who could have sold them to consumers. Consumers should stop using the recalled products immediately and contact the recalling firms to receive the remedies listed in the recall, which is a refund, a replacement or repair.
