P.E.I. government tables $77.9 million capital spending plan for year ahead.

CHARLOTTETOWN – Prince Edward Island Finance Minister Allen Roach has tabled a $77.9 million capital budget for 2016-17.

Roach says the capital plan represents fiscal responsibility with an increase of $3.4 million over the 2015-16 plan.

The budget includes $21 million for health improvements including initial funding for a new linear accelerator at the Prince Edward Island Cancer Treatment Centre.

Nearly $30 million will be spent on transportation infrastructure, and $15.2 million on capital projects in education such as new computers for schools and 19 new school buses.

Premier Wade MacLauchlan says the government is living within its means and didn’t include anything “glitzy” in the capital budget.

He says the province may have to revisit some elements of the capital budget once the federal government unveils its plans for infrastructure programs.
