New regulations for tanning and tattoo salons to begin in Newfoundland

ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – New regulations banning the use of tanning salons for those under 19 years of age are poised to take effect in Newfoundland and Labrador at the end of the week.

Beginning Friday owners of personal services establishments and tanning facilities will also have to register with Service Newfoundland and Labrador and post health warning signs.

The provincial law also focuses on infection control practices at tattoo and body piercing shops.

Those businesses will be prohibited from providing invasive body modification such as scarification, tongue splitting and sub-dermal implants to anyone under 19.

They will also be prohibited from offering tattooing or body piercing to anyone under 16 without the consent of a parent.
