Most actively traded companies on the TSX, TSX Venture Exchange markets

TORONTO – Some of the most active companies traded Thursday on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the TSX Venture Exchange:

Toronto Stock Exchange (12,409.25 down 26.91 points):

CGA Mining Ltd. (TSX:CGA). Miner. Up eight cents, or 2.95 per cent, at $2.79 on 21,801,939 shares. B2Gold Corp. announced Wednesday it will acquire the Vancouver-based company in a deal pegged at $1.1 billion. The combined companies will have operating mines in Nicaragua and the Philippines.

B2Gold Corp. (TSX:BTO). Miner. Up eight cents, or 2.11 per cent, at $3.87 on 12,969,291 shares.

Canacol Energy Ltd. (TSX:CNE). Oil and gas. Up three cents, or 6.74 per cent, at 47.5 cents on 10,046,056 shares. The Calgary-based company’s stock jumped on news its proved reserves for fiscal year ended June 30, 2011 increased by 98 per cent to 10.5 million barrels.

Westaim Corp. (TSX:WED). Investment firm. Up a penny, or 1.30 per cent, at 78 cents on 8,718,400 shares.

Orbite Aluminae Inc. (TSX:ORT). Technology and miner. Down 26 cents, or 7.05 per cent, at $3.43 on 6,746,079 shares. The Montreal-based company’s stock gave back some of its gains a day after announcing it has developed a technology to purify silica, used in ceramics, glass and aluminum.

New Gold Inc. (TSX:NGD). Miner. Up 18 cents, or 1.48 per cent, at $12.32 on 4,845,585 shares. The price of the December bullion contract dropped US$1.50 to $1,770.20 per ounce on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

TSX Venture Exchange (1,334.89 down 8.63 points):

CGX Energy Inc. (TSXV:OYL). Oil and natural gas exploration. Down eight cents, or 24.24 per cent, at 25 cents on 5,064,975 shares.

Midlands Minerals Corp. (TSXV:MEX). Gold exploration. Unchanged at 1.5 cents on 4,651,000 shares.

Air Canada (TSX:AC.B). Airliner. Unchanged at $1.23 on 396,247 shares. The country’s largest domestic and international full-service airline announced it will hire about 1,100 employees across a number of fields, including 200 at its new low-cost carrier.

Nexen Inc. (TSX:NXY). Oil and gas. Up five cents, or 0.20 per cent, at $24.72 on 1,209,137 shares. Shareholders overwhelmigly voted to approve a proposed $15.1-billion takeover of the company by China National Offshore Oil Company. The offer still requires approval by the Canadian government under the Investment Canada Act.
