Some of the most active companies traded Thursday on the Toronto Stock Exchange:

Encana Corp. (TSX:ECA). Oil and gas. Up 38 cents, or 3.64 per cent, to $10.81 on 10.9 million shares. Encana Corp. had a US$601-million loss in the second quarter but says the latter part of 2016 is shaping up better than expected. The Calgary-based company says that some of its key expenses will be US$100-million less than the previous estimate, and savings will be continued into 2017.

First Quantum Minerals Ltd. (TSX:FM). Miner. Up four cents, or 0.40 per cent, to $10.04 on 7.1 million shares.

Nemaska Lithium Inc. (TSX:NMX). Miner. Down seven cents, or 6.80 per cent, to 96 cents on 5.9 million shares.

Kinross Gold Corp. (TSX:K). Miner. Up 22 cents, or 3.41 per cent, to $6.67 on 5.1 million shares.

B2Gold Corp. (TSX:BTO). Miner. Up 19 cents, or 5.37 per cent, to $3.73 on 4.4 million shares.

Baytex Energy Corp. (TSX:BTE). Oil and gas. Down nine cents, or 1.26 per cent, to $7.04 on 3.9 million shares.

Companies reporting major news:

AltaGas Ltd. (TSX:ALA). Oil and gas. Up $1.93, or 6.17 per cent, to $33.20 on 1.5 million shares. AltaGas Ltd. said Thursday it has reduced its workforce by about 70 workers. It said the job cuts completed in June would result in a $7-million restructuring charge on its second-quarter earnings. The reduction of its non-utility workforce is expected to result in savings of about $7 million per year.
