Some of the most active companies traded Wednesday on the Toronto Stock Exchange:

Bombardier Inc. (TSX:BBD.B). Aerospace, rail equipment. Up 14 cents, or 11.86 per cent, to $1.32 on 20.7 million shares.

Petrowest Corp. (TSX:PRW). Oil and gas. Up 21 cents, or 82.35 per cent, to 46.5 cents on 9.1 million shares.

Yamana Gold Inc. (TSX:YRI). Miner. Up two cents, or 0.73 per cent, to $2.77 on 4.7 million shares.

Baytex Energy Corp. (TSX:BTE). Oil and gas. Up 14 cents, or 2.37 per cent, to $6.04 on 4.4 million shares.

First Quantum Minerals Ltd. (TSX:FM). Miner. Down eight cents, or 1.64 per cent, to $4.81 on 4.3 million shares.

Canadian Oil Sands Ltd. (TSX:COS). Oil and gas. Up eight cents, or 0.91 per cent, to $8.90 on 4.1 million shares. Suncor Energy (down 40 cents, or 1.08 per cent, to $36.60 on 2.9 million shares) may have some competition in its hostile takeover pursuit of COS. An affidavit filed with the Alberta Securities Commission by a COS financial adviser says that, as of last week, more than 25 other parties were kicking the tires.

Maple Leaf Foods (TSX:MFI). Consumer packaged goods. Up 34 cents, or 1.60 per cent, to $21.54 on 248,417 shares. The Toronto-based meat processor plans to eliminate more than 400 salaried jobs, mostly before the end of the year, as it works to reduce costs and cut back in areas where it says there are too many managers.
