DETROIT – The state of Michigan says it won’t lift a ban on hazardous materials crossing the Ambassador Bridge in Detroit.
The state said Friday that public safety wouldn’t be enhanced if the materials were allowed to move on the bridge between the United States and Canada instead of by Detroit River ferry.
The owner of the Ambassador Bridge asked for possible changes in 2008. Michigan Transportation Department engineer Tony Kratofil says the state took months to consider public comment in both countries.
The ban covers explosives, flammable liquids and radioactive materials. The prohibition extends to a tunnel connecting Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, and two sections of M-10 in Detroit, known as the Lodge Freeway.
The Detroit International Bridge Co. says a lawsuit challenging the state’s decision is likely.
