Markets Right Now: Stocks close lower on Wall Street

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The latest on developments in global financial markets (all times local):

Stocks are closing lower on Wall Street after several companies issued disappointing results and forecasts.

Athletic apparel maker Under Armour sank 13 per cent Tuesday as investors worried that its growth is slowing down. Appliance maker Whirlpool dropped 11 per cent after its own results came up short of forecasts.

Sherwin-Williams, which makes paints and coatings, plunged 11 per cent after cutting its full-year forecast because of slower sales growth and higher spending on new stores.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 54 points, or 0.3 per cent, to 18,169.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index lost 8 points, or 0.4 per cent, to 2,143. The Nasdaq composite declined 26 points, or 0.5 per cent, to 5,283.

Bond prices rose. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 1.76 per cent.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index lost 5 points, or 0.2 per cent, to 2,146. The Nasdaq composite declined 17 points, or 0.3 per cent, to 5,292.

Bond prices rose. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 1.75 per cent.
