COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa – Residents of the Lake Manawa area are working to maintain a planter that dates back to the 1900s.
The flower ring once stood in front of Lake Manawa Amusement Park and Resort’s skating rink.
The Daily Nonpareil (http://bit.ly/29H0Bnj ) reports that Walt Osborn, who has lived near the flower ring for almost 30 years, has been taking care of the planter.
The flower ring is located in the centre of an intersection and was damaged a couple of years ago when it was hit by a bus and more recently, when it was struck by a car.
“It’s a piece of Council Bluffs’ history, and it’s worth preserving,” Osborn said.
Osborn installed a flagpole, the American flag and a sprinkler system that he can attach to a hose at his nearby home.
Residents Cindy and Larry Lea joined Osborn’s wife, Jane, to add more than $300 worth of flowers to the ring this year. Most of the additions to the flower ring were funded by money donated by neighbours.
According to Lea, there has been some talk about removing the flower ring from the centre of the intersection, but neighbourhood residents think it is a piece of Council Bluffs history that should be preserved.
