NEW YORK, N.Y. – Stocks took another modest step further into record territory Wednesday after several companies reported profits that were stronger than expected. Technology stocks led the way following an encouraging report from Microsoft.
On Wednesday:
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 36.02 points, or 0.2 per cent, to 18,595.03.
The Standard & Poor’s 500 index gained 9.24 points, or 0.4 per cent, to 2,173.02.
The Nasdaq composite rose 53.56 points, or 1.1 per cent, to 5,089.93.
For the week:
The Dow is up 78.48 points, or 0.4 per cent.
The S&P 500 is up 11.28 points, or 0.5 per cent.
The Nasdaq is up 60.34 points, or 1.2 per cent.
For the year:
The Dow is up 1,170 points, or 6.7 per cent.
The S&P 500 is up 129.08 points, or 6.3 per cent.
The Nasdaq is up 82.52 points, or 1.6 per cent.
