NEW YORK, N.Y. – U.S. stocks gave up early gains to finish lower Wednesday as energy companies sank with the price of oil and weak quarterly reports weighed down technology companies.
On Wednesday:
The Dow Jones industrial average lost 48.90 points, or 0.3 per cent, to 17,780.83.
The Standard & Poor’s 500 index slipped 3.45 points, or 0.2 per cent, to 2,085.45.
The Nasdaq composite shed 10.44 points, or 0.2 per cent, to 4,833.32.
For the week:
The Dow is up 105.67 points, or 0.6 per cent.
The S&P 500 is up 14.23 points, or 0.7 per cent.
The Nasdaq is up 32.98 points, or 0.7 per cent.
For the year:
The Dow is up 355.80 points, or 2 per cent.
The S&P 500 is up 41.51 points, or 2 per cent.
The Nasdaq is down 174.09 points, or 3.5 per cent.
