NEW YORK, N.Y. – A late-day surge pushed U.S. stocks sharply higher Thursday, propelled by a recovery in energy companies and bank stocks, which have been hit hard this year.
On Thursday:
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 212.30 points, or 1.3 per cent, to 16,697.29.
The Standard & Poor’s 500 index added 21.90 points, or 1.1 per cent, to 1,951.70.
The Nasdaq composite index rose 39.60 points, or 0.9 per cent, to 4,582.20.
For the week:
The Dow is up 305.30 points, or 1.9 per cent.
The S&P 500 is up 33.92 points, or 1.8 per cent.
The Nasdaq is up 77.77 points, or 1.7 per cent.
For the year:
The Dow is down 727.74 points, or 4.2 per cent.
The S&P 500 is down 92.24 points, or 4.5 per cent.
The Nasdaq is down 425.21 points, or 8.5 per cent.
