How the Dow Jones industrial average fared on Thursday

U.S. stocks fell Thursday for the fourth day in a row as concerns about global economic weakness intensified.

Financial stocks fell hardest as investors worried that interest rates in the U.S. and elsewhere would remain low and sap bank profits. Oil prices sank again, this time to their lowest levels since May 2003.

On Thursday:

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 254.56 points, or 1.6 per cent, to 15,660.18.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index lost 22.78 points, or 1.2 per cent, to 1,829.08.

The Nasdaq composite index slid 16.76 points, or 0.4 per cent, to 4,266.84.

For the week:

The Dow is down 544.79 points, or 3.4 per cent.

The S&P 500 is down 50.97 points, or 2.7 per cent.

The Nasdaq is down 96.31 points, or 2.2 per cent.

For the year:

The Dow is down 1,764.85 points, or 10.1 per cent.

The S&P 500 is down 214.86 points, or 10.5 per cent.

The Nasdaq is down 740.57 points, or 14.8 per cent.
