U.S. stocks closed higher Thursday, extending a rally into a third day as investors’ anxiety about Britain’s vote last week to leave the European Union eased.
Consumer goods makers and utilities were the biggest gainers. Bank stocks rose after getting clearance from the Federal Reserve to raise their dividends. The stock market closed out the second quarter with modest gains.
On Thursday:
The Dow Jones industrial average climbed 235.31 points, or 1.3 per cent, to 17,929.99.
The Standard & Poor’s 500 gained 28.09 points, or 1.4 per cent, to 2,098.86.
The Nasdaq composite added 63.43 points, or 1.3 per cent, to 4,842.67.
For the week:
The Dow is up 529.24 points, or 3 per cent.
The S&P 500 is up 61.45 points, or 3 per cent.
The Nasdaq is up 134.69 points, or 2.9 per cent.
For the year:
The Dow is up 504.96 points, or 2.9 per cent.
The S&P 500 is up 54.92 points, or 2.7 per cent.
The Nasdaq is down 164.74 points, or 3.3 per cent.
