How the Dow Jones industrial average fared on Friday

NEW YORK, N.Y. – U.S. stocks jumped Friday and reached record highs after a strong jobs report for the month of July gave investors more confidence that the economy is still growing. Financial and technology stocks soared and investors sold the safe assets they have favoured for most of this year.

On Friday:

The Dow Jones industrial average leaped 191.48 points, or 1 per cent, to 18,543.53.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index surged 18.62 points, or 0.9 per cent, to 2,182.87.

The Nasdaq composite gained 54.87 points, or 1.1 per cent, to 5,221.12.

For the week:

The Dow rose 111.29 points, or 0.6 per cent.

The S&P 500 added 9.27 points, or 0.4 per cent.

The Nasdaq climbed 58.99 points, or 1.1 per cent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 1,118.50 points, or 6.4 per cent.

The S&P 500 is up 138.93 points, or 6.8 per cent.

The Nasdaq is up 213.71 points, or 4.3 per cent.
