How the Dow Jones industrial average and other major indexes fared Tuesday

Stocks closed mostly lower on Tuesday, led by declines in energy companies as the price of oil continued to fall. Energy stocks fell the most of the 10 industries in the S&P 500 index. Oilfield services companies were especially hard hit. Investors were also disappointed by earnings outlooks from companies including Priceline and Michael Kors.

On Tuesday:

The Dow rose 17.60 points, or 0.1 per cent, to 17,383.84.

The S&P 500 index dropped 5.71 points, or 0.3 per cent, to 2,012.10.

The Nasdaq composite fell 15.27 points, or 0.3 per cent, to 4,623.64.

For the week:

The Dow is down 6.68 points, or 0.04 per cent.

The S&P 500 index is down 5.95 points, or 0.3 per cent.

The Nasdaq is down 7.11 points, or 0.2 per cent

For the year:

The Dow is up 807.18 points, or 4.9 per cent.

The S&P 500 index is up 163.74 points, or 8.9 per cent.

The Nasdaq is up 447.05 points, or 10.7 per cent
