How the Dow Jones industrial average and other major indexes fared on Tuesday

U.S. stocks closed little changed on Tuesday as investors sorted through some mixed results from big U.S. retailers and new data on inflation, manufacturing and homebuilding. Energy stocks were among the biggest decliners as oil prices closed lower.

For Monday:

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 6.49 points, or 0.04 per cent, to 17,489.50.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index fell 2.75 points, or 0.1 per cent, to 2,050.44.

The Nasdaq composite index added 1.40 points, or 0.03 per cent, to 4,986.01.

For the week:

The Dow is up 244.26 points, or 1.4 per cent.

The S&P is up 27.40 points, or 1.4 per cent.

The Nasdaq is up 58.13 points, or 1.2 per cent.

For the year:

The Dow is down 333.57 points, or 1.9 per cent.

The S&P is down 8.46 points, or 0.4 per cent.

The Nasdaq is up 249.96 points, or 5.3 per cent.
