How the Dow Jones industrial average and other major indexes fared on Tuesday

A slump in energy prices pushed the stock market back from record levels on Tuesday. Energy stocks fell as the price of oil resumed its descent. Traders speculated that member nations of the oil-producing group OPEC would fail to agree on production cuts at an upcoming meeting.

Tuesday:

The Dow dropped 2.96 points, or 0.02 per cent, to 17,814.94.

The S&P 500 index fell 2.38 points, or 0.1 per cent, to 2,067.03.

The Nasdaq composite rose 3.36 points, or 0.1 per cent, to 4,758.25.

For the week:

The Dow is up 4.88 points, or 0.03 per cent.

The S&P 500 index is up 3.53 points, or 0.2 per cent.

The Nasdaq is up 45.28 points, or 1 per cent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 1,238.28 points, or 7.5 per cent.

The S&P 500 index is up 218.67 points, or 11.8 per cent.

The Nasdaq is up 581.66 points, or 13.9 per cent.
