Signs that the Federal Reserve would keep interest rates low for several more months pushed stocks broadly higher on Thursday, adding to what has been a near eight-day rally. Energy stocks advanced with the price of oil.
On Thursday:
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 138.46 points, or 0.8 per cent, to close at 17,050.75.
The Standard & Poor’s 500 index added 17.60 points, or 0.9 per cent, to 2,013.43.
The Nasdaq composite rose 19.64 points, or 0.4 per cent, to 4,810.79.
For the week:
The Dow is up 578.38 points, or 3.5 per cent.
The S&P 500 index is up 62.07 points, or 3.2 per cent.
The Nasdaq is up 103.01 points, or 2.2 per cent.
For the year:
The Dow is down 772.32 points, or 4.3 per cent.
The S&P 500 index is down 45.47 points, or 2.2 per cent.
The Nasdaq is up 74.73 points, or 1.6 per cent.
