The stock market closed higher on Monday, led by gains in energy companies as the price of oil turned higher after a recent slump. Defence contractors rose and travel and airlines companies fell as traders responded to the terrorist attacks in Paris.
For Monday:
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 237.77 points, or 1.4 per cent, to 17,483.01.
The Standard & Poor’s 500 index gained 30.15 points, or 1.5 per cent, to 2,053.19.
The Nasdaq composite index added 56.73 points, or 1.2 per cent, to 4,984.62.
For the year:
The Dow is down 340.06 points, or 1.9 per cent.
The S&P is down 5.71 points, or 0.3 per cent.
The Nasdaq is up 248.56 points, or 5.3 per cent.
