How the Dow Jones industrial average and other major indexes fared on Friday

A slide in oil prices and mixed news on jobs in the U.S. sent stocks lower on Friday. Investors were discouraged by weak U.S. wage growth in December, despite another strong increase in hiring. Friday’s loss followed two days of big gains for U.S. stocks.

On Friday:

The Dow Jones industrial average slid 170.50 points, or 1 per cent, to 17,737.37.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index shed 17.33 points, or 0.8 per cent, to 2,044.81.

The Nasdaq composite lost 32.12 points, or 0.7 per cent, to 4,704.07.

For the week:

The Dow is down 95.62 points, or 0.5 per cent.

The S&P 500 is down 13.39 points, or 0.7 per cent.

The Nasdaq composite is down 22.75 points, or 0.5 per cent.

For the year:

The Dow is down 85.70 points, or 0.5 per cent.

The S&P 500 index is down 14.09 points, or 0.7 per cent.

The Nasdaq is down 31.99 points, or 0.7 per cent.
