MCALLEN, Texas – A South Texas grower has recalled shipments of orange habanero peppers shipped to Indianapolis and McAllen, Texas, since April 28 because of a potential salmonella risk.
McAllen-based Montero Farms issued the recall notice Friday after routine testing by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration detected potential contamination. The recalled product was shipped in 154 8-pound cardboard boxes marked on the top with lot No. 41142-41143.
Those who purchased the affected peppers should return them to the store where they were purchased for refunds.
Montero Farms says no illnesses have been reported related to the peppers.
Salmonella can cause serious, sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy people can experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
