German jobless rate rises to 6 per cent in July

BERLIN – Germany’s unemployment rate edged up 0.1 percentage point to 6 per cent in July.

The Federal Labor Agency said Thursday that 2.661 million people were registered unemployed in Europe’s largest economy, about 47,000 more than in June.

Compared with the same month a year earlier, there were 112,000 fewer jobless people, reflecting Germany’s strong economy.

In seasonally adjusted terms, the number of people out of work was down 7,000 compared with June.
