NORTH SALEM, N.Y. – Authorities say a wheel and part of a seat from a small airplane that vanished while on approach to a Connecticut airport have been retrieved from a New York reservoir.
A New York City Department of Environmental Protection spokesman says divers and helicopters spotted the plane’s debris Friday in the Titicus Reservoir in North Salem, in Westchester County.
Adam Bosch says the 1971 Cessna was on a landing approach when it lost radar contact with Danbury Airport late Thursday afternoon. He says the single-engine aircraft originated in Danbury, flew to Mississippi and was returning when it vanished.
The number of people on board wasn’t immediately known.
Bosch says an oily sheen from the aircraft also was found on the reservoir. He says there’s no threat to the city’s water supply.
