Companies that pledged to Humane Society to stop or not to do future research on chimpanzees

In the last several years, about 25 companies have pledged to the Humane Society of the United States that they will not use chimpanzees in future research on medicines or consumer products.

Many had not done so before, however. Five of the companies asked to remain anonymous.

Pharmaceutical companies: Abbvie Inc., Actelion Pharmaceuticals Ltd., Amgen Inc., AstraZeneca PLC, Endo Health Solutions Inc., Gilead Sciences Inc., GlaxoSmithKline PLC, Hospira Inc., Idenix Pharmaceuticals Inc., Merck & Co., Novo Nordisk A/S, Phoenix Pharmaceuticals Inc.

Research labs: Best American Toxicology Testing Services LLC, Genesis Laboratories

Makers of drug ingredients/medical products: DuPont Co., Excel Bio-Products Inc., Grifols, QED Bioscience Inc., Panigen Inc.

Consumer-products maker Colgate-Palmolive Co.
