HALIFAX – Nova Scotia’s economic development minister says his department is reviewing a proposal for the creation of a regional enterprise network in Cape Breton.
Michel Samson said the government likes the idea but it’s examining the proposal to ensure it is workable.
Officials from Cape Breton’s four largest municipalities signed on to the proposal in January. It includes the Cape Breton Regional Municipality and the counties of Inverness, Richmond and Victoria.
Samson said he’s glad to see that municipalities are taking it upon themselves to figure out the best means of delivering economic development initiatives in their areas.
“The fact that they are sitting at the table and they’re coming forward with this is certainly music to our ears,” he said Thursday.
“This is what we want to see around the province where municipal units are bringing forward these ideas. This is not being forced upon them but that they’re sitting down together and figuring out what is the best means of being able to deliver economic development initiatives in their areas.”
He said if it’s approved, the network will be eligible for provincial funding. Samson expects a final decision to be made within a couple of weeks.
