2 contracted painters die after falling off lift that tipped over near roof of a Phoenix jail

PHOENIX – Authorities say two painters have died after falling six stories off a hydraulic lift near the roof level of a Phoenix jail.

Maricopa County Sheriff’s officials say the contracted workers were repainting the Lower Buckeye Jail when the lift tipped over late Wednesday morning.

Sheriff’s spokesman Brandon Jones says the accident remains under investigation, but it appears the lift had been placed on a downhill slope on the jail’s northwest side.

Jones says inmates in the recreation yard saw the painters fall and reported it to tower officers.

Officials say both workers were taken to a Phoenix hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

The names of the two painters haven’t been released yet.

Authorities say both victims worked for a Phoenix painting company but another company owns the lift.
