Raina+Wilson’s CB portrait of Vice Media CEO Shane Smith won an award

All of us at Canadian Business were pleased to learn earlier this week that a portrait we commissioned has won a spot in the prestigious Graphis Photography Annual 2015. Congratulations to Raina + Wilson for their winning portrait of Vice Media CEO Shane Smith, who we profiled in our annual Power 50 List. We’re privileged to work with some of the best and most talented photographers and illustrators in the business.

Here’s an excerpt from Raina+Wilson’s nomination statement:

We were commissioned by Canadian Business Magazine to shoot a series of portraits that looked like a classic daguerreotype. This portrait of Vice Media’s CEO Shane Smith is one of our favorites from the shoot.

We used continuous lights versus strobe and built and small, dark portable black-out room for our subjects. We photographed them at an extremely shallow depth of field. And the final daguerreotype look was achieved in post.

In the end, we chose a photo from this series to be the cover of the September 2014 issue. We couldn’t be prouder to see the photographers’ work recognized on the global stage.
