Despite higher-than-expected job gains, overall unemployment still rose. Some provinces were hit harder than others.
You may have already heard this morning’s good news: Canada added 52,100 jobs in September, about five times as many as experts had expected.
You may have also heard the bad news: that still wasn’t enough to lower the unemployment rate, which rose one-tenth of a point to 7.4%.
According to Statistics Canada, the new jobs mostly went to men between the ages of 25 and 54. In terms of sheer numbers, Ontario added the most jobs, 31,600. That said, Canada’s biggest province shot up only 0.1% in terms of overall employment. By percentage, Nova Scotia fared the best with a 0.9% gain, while its next-door neighbour, New Brunswick, did the exact opposite, losing 0.9%.
Statistics Canada says the biggest gains were in retail and wholesale sectors.
