Statistics Canada has reported that public sector employment has grown much more rapidly.
Since the end of 2007, Statistics Canada has reported that public sector employment has grown much more rapidly than the private segment. By September 2011, there were 5.23% more people on the payrolls of governments and crown corporations than there were at the end of 2007. Private sector employment only grew by 1.53% in the same period. In other words, if Public Inc. and Private Inc. had each started with 1,000 employees, Public would have 1,052 and Private would have 1,015. By the end of September 2009, the recession had dropped private employment by 2.65%, but the public sector grew by 0.97%. When the numbers of employees are considered, results are even more dramatic. At the end of 2007, there were 10,967,600 and 3,399,900 employees in the private and public sectors, respectively. In the 15 quarters since then, private employment rose by 167,600 people. Public employment, while starting from a much smaller base, outstripped this by adding 177,800.
