25 big-name Canadian companies with no women directors

Canada lags behind many other Western nations when it comes to female representation on boards.

Far too many Canadian boards still have zero women. I decided to identify some of the big-name culprits; this data gathered by Catalyst, a nonprofit that advocates for more female representation in business, was particularly helpful. According to the census, approximately 40% of companies (177 in 2011) had no women serving on their boards—a shockingly high number. Indeed, according to another study by Catalyst, only 10.3% of board seats in this country are held by women. While there are many countries that are worse off, there are also quite a few that are better, including the United States, which sits at 16.1% (Norway has the most female representation on its boards: 40.1%).

The problem in Canada needs to be addressed, so here is a list of 25 of the top 500 Canadian companies that have no women on their boards (based on their websites). I know firsthand that there are many qualified women able to fill these seats. Meanwhile, a number of the boards below contain men who are governance experts and who promote boardroom diversity. It’s time they practiced what they preach.
